Dr. Yue Xie is currently a Marie Curie Fellow at the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge. She received her PhD in Computer Science from the University of Adelaide, Australia. Her research focuses on applying evolutionary computation, embodied intelligence, and artificial intelligence to the innovative design of complex systems. Her work spans a broad spectrum from theoretical foundations to practical applications, including bio-inspired optimization, multi-objective optimization, and the exploration of embodied intelligence in soft robotic design.
This presentation focuses on the innovative application of evolutionary algorithms and generative AI technologies in the design of soft robots, with particular emphasis on how the concept of embodied intelligence can enable more efficient robotic adaptability. The work integrates generative AI technologies and multi-objective optimization for the bio-inspired design of soft robots. Soft robots possess flexibility, adaptability, and plasticity, allowing them to significantly enhance their self-adaptive capabilities in complex and dynamic environments. Through multi-objective optimization, a diverse set of high-quality soft robot designs was generated, simulating the adaptability and resilience found in natural systems. This design approach aims to realize embodied intelligence by endowing robots with decision-making and learning abilities akin to biological systems, enabling them to tackle complex challenges in unknown environments.
Future research will further explore cross-domain applications of soft robots, including in healthcare, agriculture, and environmental monitoring. The goal is to develop efficient, adaptive robotic systems capable of autonomous decision-making, task execution, and environmental adaptation. This progression from theoretical foundations to practical applications not only deepens our understanding of bio-inspired intelligence but also offers new technological support and perspectives for intelligent manufacturing and sustainable development.
